Honors Experiences

Fostering for OAR
First Honors Experience
For my first honors experiences, I fostered cats for the Ohio Alleycat rescue! I fostered three cats over the course of about a year. I have learned a lot about what it takes to run a no-kill animal shelter and the importance of every individual on a team. This has greatly impacted me because it taught me so much about what teamwork really means. One does not have to see the outcome of their hard work to know that it is making a difference. It is important to realize that being on a team does not always mean being there every step of the way, some individual work will always be involved and is really crucial for the best possible outcome. I really enjoyed doing this work with OAR and absolutely plan on fostering again when I have the time!
Building a Computer and Keyboard
Second Honors Experience
For my second honors experience, I decided to research and build a personal computer and keyboard. I started this task by reading about the different parts that make up a computer and keyboard and the role that each part plays in their functioning as a system. After getting all of the parts for both the computer and the keyboard, it was time to begin assembling it all. To start learning how to do this, I watched a few videos online and reached out to a couple friends of mine who have done this all before to ask for some tips. While this was a tedious process at times, I was patient and careful with my work. Once I got everything assembled and working I was overjoyed.

Summer Research
Third Honors Experience
This honors experience was based upon the opportunity I had to participate in the RHEST program at UC. The research I completed through this program focused on testing the security/robustness of a machine learning algorithm. On top of this, the students in the program met regularly to work on and practice for our research presentations and posters for the end of the semester. It was exciting to get to meet people from other colleges and hear about their undergraduate experiences and research they had done. The process of putting together and giving a presentation at the end of the program was something that was very stressful for me since I have a really big fear of public speaking. This, however, just empowered me to give the smoothest presentation I could. With this, I was excited to win the best presentation at the event!
Travel Journalism
Fourth Honors Experience
For this honors experience, I took a travel journalism seminar taught by Jenny Wohlfarth that was followed with a trip to Iceland. This was a life-changing experience for me. While taking the course, we had to maintain a travel blog with eight travel articles and submit two other articles. As I am transitioning out of engineering and preparing myself for law school this fall, it felt amazing to be writing again. In engineering, I have kind of lost my previous love for writing simply because I do not have time for it anymore. With this class, Jenny empowered me to get out of my box and get used to writing once again.
Our class discussions allowed me to connect with these classmates from all different majors and discuss issues we were all interested in. The opportunity to then share the trip to Iceland with them really meant a lot to me. I was pushed out of my box in the most amazing ways possible and discovered so much about myself along the way.
I have attached a link below of my travel blog from the course to read!
